The myth that plantation teak doesn’t meet top-quality standards is fading fast. Given the proper growing conditions, teak grown on a renewable forestry plantation is virtually identical to the timber produced in Southeast Asia’s tropical forests.

To cultivate teak lumber that has the classic look and feel of Burma teak, plantations must recreate the soil and rainfall characteristics of Teak’s native habitat. That means that choosing the proper location is critical. Proteak has carefully selected its plantation sites to closely mimic the tropical dry regions that teak naturally thrives in.

This allows Proteak to grow its trees without the use of irrigation, fertilizers or other growth accelerants which can change the look and properties of this legendary wood. Allowed to grow at its natural pace, our timber exhibits the same beauty and durability of old growth Asian teak. That’s why we refer to our teak as “Slow Growth,” because it presents the same benefits as old-growth teak, but grown sustainably and much closer to home.

Contrary to rumor, studies by the USDA have shown that plantation teak performs up to the same standards as old-growth teak in the areas of erosion rate, dimensional stability, warping and surface checking. Additionally, research conducted by India’s forestry department has concluded that even small-scale teak plantations can yield high quality timber.

Proteak’s plantations are situated on reclaimed ranch lands along the Pacific Coast of Mexico where the soil and climate closely mimics the best teak growing regions of Southeast Asia. These plantations encompass roughly 8,000 acres under cultivation, with an additional 2,000 acres of virgin tropical forests protected by Proteak. By utilizing techniques that ensure teak timber that meets the high standards of quality and sustainability, Proteak is helping to raise the bar for the teak forestry industry.

  • Proteak’s slow growth timber is cultivated on renewable plantations along Mexico’s Pacific coast, chosen for their ideal teak growing conditions.
  • Our trees are grown without irrigation, unlike other plantation teak around the world. This gives our trees the strength and characteristics of old-growth teak. That’s why we call it “Slow Growth.”
  • Slow growth teak displays the beautiful color and rich grain of old-growth teak in a product that’s environmentally responsible.
  • Studies have found that plantation teak enjoys the same density, moisture resistance, and stability of old-growth Asian teak.
  • Proteak’s plantations were established on reclaimed ranch land and protect over 2,000 acres of adjacent tropical forests.
